“Shock” and “surprise” were two words repeated in the Dauphin County Courthouse early Monday, when Harrisburg School District Solicitor James Ellison announced that the school board was no longer going to contest the state’s petition to take over the district.
Ellison declined to comment on the decision but said the district would make a statement later in the day. District spokeswoman Kirsten Keys did not immediately have a comment.
District Superintendent Sybil Knight-Burney was not in attendance.
Jody Barksdale and Michele Rolko — president and vice president of the Harrisburg Education Association, the local teachers union — said they originally planned to be at the courthouse all day. They too were surprised by the district’s decision not to contest the takeover.
