This year, Kipona, the annual farewell to summer in Harrisburg, will introduce new attractions to the popular lineup of events.

The 102nd annual three-day festival will be held Sept. 1-3 in Riverfront Park and City Island in Harrisburg. Kipona celebrates the Susquehanna River and is named for the Delaware Indian word for “sparkling waters.”

More than 40 food vendors and three stages, featuring more than 30 bands, will highlight the event, which also encompasses a Native American Pow-Wow Festival, Festival of India and canoe races.

In addition, there will be an Artist Village with arts and crafts, biergarten featuring Zeroday Brewing Co. and The Millworks, crab cake eating contest, children’s festival, carnival games and the 2nd Annual Duck Derby rubber duck race in the Susquehanna River to benefit Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

No river celebration is complete without fireworks, scheduled to launch from City Island at 8:45 p.m. Sept. 2.

New this year:

Free Zombie Virus Mobile Escape Room, presented by Harrisburg Escape Rooms. Mobile escape room with a live zombie. “You complete the research, cure the scientist, and disarm the bomb before it explodes.” The 15-30 minute escapes will be available for groups of 4-8 players. No advance registration required. First-come, first-serve the day of the event. Will be available Sept. 1-2, only.

Free outdoor movie featuring Coco presented by the Midtown Cinema at 8:30 p.m. Sept. 1.
A dramatic, illuminated tightwire walk across the Susquehanna River after dark presented by Mystery Circus Arts, LLC. 8:15 p.m. Sept. 1

Join Paint & Create at Kipona to create your very own “Susquehanna Ablaze” 8×10 canvas painting on Sept. 3. Two sessions will be available at noon and 2:30pm in the City Island Riverside Pavilion. Space is limited to 50 per session on a first-come, first-serve basis. No advanced registration. Painting class and all supplies are complimentary.

Metered parking will apply on Sept. 1. Parking will be free Sept. 2-3. Otherwise, it will be $10 in the Market Square Garage and $5 on City Island.
