Tony James (Harrisburg, PA/Harrisburg ) scored a season-high 34 points to lead the 8th ranked Northampton men’s basketball team to a hard-fought 91-86 victory over Broome Community College on Thursday evening at the Hornet’s Nest.
In what proved to be a tight game throughout, the Hornets had the ball down 3 with five seconds to play and the Spartan defense was able to come up with a stop and and secure the win.
“We are glad to be getting out of here with a victory,” remarked a relieved Northampton Head Coach Brennan McCarthy, “Broome made us work for everything tonight and we were able to find a way to grind it out and get the win.”
Broome connected on 16 3-pointers in the contest, making 7 in the first half which ended in a 38-38 deadlock, and knocking down 9 more in the final 20 minutes. The Hornets finished 12 of 13 from the foul line, while Northampton converted 21 of 28 of their charity attempts.
Michael Jackson (West Lawn, PA/Wilson West Lawn) added 17 points, Raylil Law-Winton (Pennsbury, PA/Pennsbury) had 15 and Reuben Soto (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) chipped in with 12 for the Spartans.
James, who totaled his 34 points on 13 of 20 shooting from the floor and a perfect 8 for 8 from the line, also added a team-high 13 rebounds and 7 assists. Law-Winton also dished out 7 assists, while Meese Tobey (Woodlyn, PA/Ridley)and Will Slippe (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) each grabbed 7 rebounds.
The Spartans finished 33 of 67 from the field and 4 of 16 from distance.
The victory moves Northampton to 12-1 overall, while Broome falls to 5-7.
The Spartans hit the road to Toms River, NJ on Saturday for their final game before holiday break.
